I started making samples out of denim and I wanted to think about how I could make it worn out and how to distress the fabric.

And so I started by taking out the individual strings of denim after cutting the fabric on the side and I thought it looked interesting. It made me think if I could then weave with the strands of denim but they were too short and they would rip too easily. I really liked the idea of trying to reweave the string and to see ow I could take that to the next level. I also thought about using sand paper to rip the fabric and I liked the puff around the edges that was created when using the sandpaper to rub it on the fabric abut it took long for the fabric to come apart and I didn't think that it was successful as I thought it would be.

Also I wanted to use some kind of rock powder to make the jeans look like they have been worn by a miner but the problem is that I don't know where to find it yet. and so I will have to find solutions for that.

Another really interesting photographer I was looking at was Karl Heinz weinberger. What I really liked was that he was photographing really interesting details and I thought they would help when I will start thinking about hopefully making a garment or part of one. Like for example zipper details or jacket pockets and the characters that he was photographing had this 90s vibe which I think fits in perfectly with my theme.

For now I want to be still pretty open interns of ideas and themes. I also want to start looking more into jeans details like pockets, fit etc.

After doing some more research on mining and miners and I really liked the idea of them working in the mine and then having to wipe their hands on the jeans and the stains from the rock power and and the worn out look was really interesting and so I want to start thinking about how I can make my denim look very worn out and distressed like was worn ages ago.

I continued with my denim research and I found out that mostly miners would wear denim to work and I thought can could merge in really well with the idea of the Lawrence strike and food because miners were also exposed to the danger of the roof collapsing at any time like the building where the factory workers were living.

I started looking at Adres Serrano,

"The imagery and content of Serrano's work is often a challenge to mainstream propriety or sensibilities. He produces images that combine the sacred, such as religious iconography, with the what might be called the profane: sex, bodies and their fluids, poverty, death, and/or violence. Even his studio portraiture presents controversial subjects in highly stylized ways, framing a homeless person or a loaded gun in the same way as they might be the subject in a Renaissance portrait or classical still-life."

What I really liked about his work is that especially in the early works series, he has perfectly expressed the idea I stated to think about when thinking about the history of denim and the food I ate during Christmas break. And that is because I was thinking about the Lawrence textile strike in 1912 where on one of the signs they write "they asked for bread, they received bayonets" and I thought that was really interesting because the people were starving the conditions they were in were vey poor and more than that they were in danger because of the building they were living in. And so that and the food is very ironic and actually disturbing because kids couldn't survive over the age of 6 and so for me to have a beautiful Christmas meal makes me think of how grateful I am.

90s

I then started looking at artists that inspire me like bands, art movements and designers.

I love the 90s, the style and the music and so I did research about what songs/bands I listen to from the 90s. Like Joan Osborne, Drill,The Martinis. The Cranberries.

What I love about these bands/artists is the textural felling of the sings and they're very layered like my style and while I listen it makes me wanna work with layering more in my design development etc.

Also I then started looking into the grudge movement "Grunge. It's a word that became synonymous with the Seattle sound. It's a word that was used to describe a number of different “alternative” bands from the region in 1980s, and then also into the 1990s with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees.(0

inwards outwards

While I was doing my inward outward project, while I was reading the brief I tried to think of ideas. And so things that stood out to me in the brief was when it said to analyse yourself and your own behaviour I started thinking about the things that I like to photograph the most, and things like receipts and travel.

I tried to print out as much information about what I did during the Christmas break and the most "research" was about the food I was eating during the break. I thought that was interesting because we have traditional food that we eat during Christmas like sarmale or a specific type of salad, turkey etc. And the idea came to me when I was helping out my dad and he threw away the leftovers that he couldn't use to cook.

and the colour palette was interesting and I thought that it might be a good idea inward outwards

Christmas break

Over the Christmas break, I tried to finish all my previous work so I can then start thinking about the inwards outwards project.

When I first read the brief what stood out to me was that we have to dig deep into ourselves and try to find out what defines who we are and the habits we have developed like what route do we take to uni and maybe our daily routine etc.

I started thinking about the food I ate during the break because my dad was cooking for the Christmas dinner and he threw away the peeled skin of some carrots and some other vegetables that he cut up and I thought the color palette looked really interesting and so I started researching and taking pictures of the food that I ate and the places we bought it from.

I also started thinking about the music I listen to and how I travel from one location to the other.

Part 2 contextual review

Contextual review

Roxana Andronache

I think overall the projects we have been working on in part 1 have shaped my view of who I am and gave me a different perspective on who I could become as an individual and as an artist. Researching different artists and their practice for each project has helped me gain a broader understanding of the world around me and  possibilities to develop my work further for each project.

In part 1 I have explored a range of styles and experimented with materials and trying to develop skills like draping on the stand, drawing and research development. Because I come from a b-tec course I was being taught to work in a completely different way and so I wanted to be able to develop my ideas visually in my sketchbook to carry out my research and to show the progression of my ideas clearly. What I have learned in part one from each project was that I had to look at my work from new prospectives and to reflect on what specifically made me carry on with research down new paths in my project. In part two I have started with an open mind to develop my research more personal and to use my skills that I have devoted in part 1 like reflective drawing and writing to break down each idea and to take it to the next level.

I think one of the most successful project in part  two is the one titled "Multiples". I wanted to challenge myself and so I chose a hard material to work with.I chose to work with  "stews" because they seem restrictive and limited in terms of doing things like bending, melting and breaking into pieces but I knew I had to work around it . This project was personal because it is about my father who used to be a real estate agent and now works in construction.  I wanted to combine these two jobs by using screws to represent construction and a suit to represent real estate. When developing my samples I have tried to find solutions like using string and glue to bring them together and then I started weaving and trying to work with scale. The next step was placing my samples on the body and trying to work with the idea of the suit. I think overall this project has been one of the most successful because I truly engaged with the material and have explored different skills and developed a better understanding of the world around me.

Through the course I want to expand my research and keep an open mind. I have always been influenced by my family and my heritage. My grandmother (from my prospective) is an artist because she used to paint and weave rugs. Her rugs were very tactile and textural and full of color and her painting were expressive and experimental.  I love how inspired she is by the world around her and that made me want to be more diverse. I also have been inspired by Karl Heinz Weinberger who is a photographer from Switzerland who captures interesting garment details like usually jeans and denim jackets. He inspired me when I was doing my denim project because I started thinking about the small details like what kind of zipper should I use in my garment or what accessories to make to create a personality in my samples and design development.

"Denim" was based on the 90s rock and roll and miners workwear and touch of 1910s western. The first idea I had was looking at the food I ate during the Christmas break as my primary research and then I started to look into the Lawrence textile strike where people were starving and in very poor conditions. But as the project progressed I found an artist called Andres Serrano who is a photographer that combines the sacred with the profane which made me think about the children that have not survived over the age of six due to the poor conditions. In my samples I wanted to explore the idea of the miners wiping their hands on the jeans, the stains from the rock powder to the blood stains etc.
