These are some pictures in the sheperds bush market that i found on Pinterest from the 40s and 50s. I wanted to research the history of this place and i found out that it played an important role in world war II as the people would use this place to trade. It was their safe place where they could be themselves and spend time with their loved ones.
I am really interested in the history and I want to research further into the market and the affect it had on the people.
"The market dates back to the early part of the twentieth century, when the present layout of the Hammersmith and City tube line was fixed. The market opened for business in around 1914, with shops lining the railway viaduct. Individual market vendors sell a wide variety of goods, including fresh produce, cooked food, music CDs, household goods and clothing. Individual vendors rent their stalls from Transport For London, who own the land on which the market sits."

The market
Pictures from old Shepherds bush.
baso-relief sculpure
When I was walking around, to be honest, nothing really stuck out to me but then I found this cinema where it had a lot of relief sculptures. I want to research more into it because I think the details could work so well with the Lino print.
I started looking at Alfred Janniot as a reference.
"His extensive bas-reliefs on the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris – built in 1931 for the Paris Colonial Exposition– portray ships, oceans, and wildlife, including antelopes, elephants, zebras, and snakes. Janniot also contributed the gilded panel Paris and New York Joining Hands Above Figures of Poetry, Beauty and Elegance on the façade of the Maison Française, Rockefeller Center, circa 1930."
I want to take the idea of carving and sculpting into stone and use in my Lino print. I think the details will start a really interesting that I can develop further by maybe printing unto fabric and then stretching into it so I can make a 2d/3d affect of the fabric as if the drawings are coming out of it. When I walked around I started drawing a lot of people because I was thinking about the community and what makes this community more special then others and so I want to focus on that. I want to then to come out of the sketchbook and make some 3d samples like little sculptures and the start applying them on the body.
I started looking at the relationship between fruits and the body and how I could experiment with draping on the body with them and these are some ideas from Pinterest.

"The modern world has separated us from the origins and uses of fruits and vegetables; we know them only for the flavours and textures they provide. Until only very recently, each held its own mystique, mythology, symbolism and connection to the culture and afterlife.
Partly through its influence as a folk medicine, the pomegranate became a symbol of life after death in Egypt—and of Christ’s suffering and resurrection in depictions by Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci. The Buddha considered it one of the three most blessed fruits. In ancient Greece, Hades lured Persephone to his underworld with pomegranate seeds.
This series aims to reintroduce these mystical, invisible qualities to fruits and vegetables that have been lost amidst the clamor of nutritional statistics. Each offers its own indelible powers beyond our narrow habits of thought."

What i really like about these photos is the sense of mystery that Maciek Jasik has created in these shoots. I was looking the sheperd bush market and when i found the old pictures from the 40s/50s i knew that i had to research more into foods and how it all brings us together to become more united. I want to create this sense of mystery in my project as for the hysory and present of this market and how it has evolved during the years.

Sheperds bush
When I was doing research about Sheperds bush I found this zine about the market oil shepherds bush. What I liked was that it described this area as a culture-focus area where you feel welcome and like you belong.
key notes:
started in 20th century life blood of the area- after world war .
world war 2 the marker was used or the veterans of the war to trade
diverse identity- afro-caribbean, arab, asian, isirsh and English
home
immigration
dances
I now feel inspired to research more into world war II and the affects it had on the people and how it brought them together in this marker.
I want to look at art- bas relief sculpture, food, the uniform, the difference between world war II and now and how the area has changed.

This picture that I took reminds me of snake skin or fish scales and so when my dad bought a fish I wanted to use it as a reference. I want to use the textural aspect to create mark making samples. I can do that by using stitch/embroidery as a form of mark making or making collaging. The market also reminded me of this image.
